Materials and shapes

Solid wood and veneer add warmth and character. HPL or ceramic are extra scratch- and stain-resistant. Glass looks airy. Choose the shape that fits your space: round for small rooms and easy movement, oval or Danish oval for soft lines and more seating, rectangular for maximum length. A pedestal base provides legroom, while a U- or X-frame looks robust.

• Allow 60 cm per person on the long side for comfortable seating.
• Leave 90 cm clear behind chairs for pulling them out and passing.
